COURSE OVERVIEW
IB English Literature Course Overview
Paper 1: Unseen
EXAM REQUIREMENTS
HL: 1 hour and 45 minutes
SL: 1 hour and 15 minutes
35% for SL and 25% for HL
Higher Level: You are required to write two essay responses in response to two questions and literary texts. There is no choice.
Standard Level: You choose between one of two printed texts and questions to write one response.
Paper 2: Comparison
EXAM REQUIREMENTS
1 hour and 45 minutes
35% for SL and 25% for HL
There will always be a choice of 4 questions. You are required to write one comparative essay response about two of your set texts in response to one of the questions.
Individual Oral
EXAM REQUIREMENTS
10-minute spoken argument about 2 texts
30% for SL and 20% for HL
You are required to discuss how a global issue is present in two of your studied texts (one text in translation). This is required to include analysis of one passage/poem from each text and discussion of how the global issue is presented across the whole text/collection of poems.
HLE Students only: HLE Essay
REQUIREMENTS
20%
1200-1500 words
You are required to independently write an essay about one of your texts where you analyse it from a broad literary perspective.

How I Support your Progress
My expertise is in helping you to develop your understanding of the complex global issues that IB texts explore and analysing these meaningfully within the historical and political contexts during which they were written. This means that your analysis will always be grounded in the global issues to allow you to confidently apply these texts to the IO, HLE and Paper 2.
I specialise in giving you the skills to interrogate your texts deeply and in relation to each other to confidently the nuaces that make texts similar and different in how they address global issues. Similarly, I prioritise extensive written and spoken practice to enable you to construct complex, sophisticated arguments about texts. This approach uses lots of modelling and teaches you different phrases that you can use to elevate your own writing style. Generally, this means focusing on thesis statements, embedding quotations seamlessly, combining ideas thoughtful and deepening analysis. This approach elevates your academic writing beyond GCSE level and provides you with the words to articulate your ideas clearly and perceptively.
With Paper 1, my teaching involves exposure to as many different voices, styles and forms as possible. For both exams, I prioritise extensive timed practice to a variety of prompts, to develop your knowledge, confidence and writing stamina, and ensure that you feel ready for any question. My aim is that for both Paper 1 and Paper 2, you go into the exam feeling like you have tackled and succeeded at such a variety of questions that you feel confident, whatever the passage.
