IGCSE English Literature (0475) Course Overview
Paper 1: Prose and Poetry
EXAM REQUIREMENTS
90 MINUTES 50%
You are required to write two essay responses. These will be on your prose and poetry set texts. It is closed book.
There will always be a choice of questions. For the prose, this will be either whole text or passage based. For the poetry, this will be a choice between two poems, each with their own question.

45 MINUTES 25%
You are required to write one essay response. This will be on your set drama text. It is open book.
There will always be a choice of questions.
Question A - Whole text: Using quotations and moments that you have learnt in response to a prompt.
Question B - Passage-based: Write a response to the prompt about a specific moment from the text.
For the 2028 cohort onwards, Cambridge have combined Paper 3 and Paper 4 into Paper 2.

75 MINUTES 25%
You are required to write one essay response, based on a question and text that you have not seen before.
There will always be a choice between a poem or a prose extract, which could be taken from a novel, short story or memoir.
The question will include three prompts to guide your essay.
How I Support your Progress
I specialise in helping you to understand your set texts deeply so that you have versatile knowledge that you could apply to either the whole text or passage question. Once you have secured the knowledge, my teaching involves strategies to help you master your essay writing by breaking it down into achievable and memorable structures that provide you with the freedom to develop your own academic style and voice. I don’t teach strict structures, like PEE or equivalents, but I focus on things like thesis statements, topic sentences, embedded quotations and developing close analysis. For each exam, I prioritise extensive timed practice, through mini questions to build your confidence and writing stamina.
If your school does coursework instead of Paper 4, I can also support with helping you to select and refine your question, identify areas to focus on and develop your argument so that your can achieve the highest possible mark with this.
Please note that whilst I have extensive experience teaching the Cambridge IGCSE course, the skills required for English Literature are transferrable across different exam boards. If you’re studying for the Pearson Edexcel IGCSE or a national GCSE provider, such as AQA or Edexcel, get in touch and I’ll be honest about the ways in which I can support your learning.
