A-Level English Literature (9695) Course Overview
Paper 1 and Paper 2
EXAM REQUIREMENTS
120 MINUTES PER EXAM 50%
You are required to write two essay responses. These will be on the set texts that you studied as part of your AS Level component.
Paper 1: Drama and Poetry
Paper 2: Prose and Unseen
There will always be a choice of questions. You may choose either passage based, or whole text. For the poetry question, you may choose a question about the named poem or a broader question during which you analyse multiple poems from the collection.
For the unseen element, you will get a choice between two printed texts. These will be drama, prose or poetry.
EXAM REQUIREMENTS
120 MINUTES PER EXAM 50%
You are required to write two essay responses. These will be on the set texts that your studied as part of your A2 Level component.
Paper 3: Shakespeare and Drama
Paper 4: Pre- and Post-1900 Poetry and Prose
There will always be a choice of questions.
The format of the exam papers are the same as Paper 1 and Paper 2, however, you will also need to make references beyond the extract or poem to the whole text/collection during your passage response.
Additionally, you are also required to engage with literary criticism for these exams. This means that, in addition to analyzing your texts closely in response to the questions, you should be considering critical perspectives of the text, too.
MY TEACHING STYLE
How I Support your Progress
My expertise is in helping you to develop your understanding of the sensitive, nuanced issues that A-Level texts explore and analysing these meaningfully within the complex contexts during which they were written. This means that your analysis will be grounded in the political and historical climate during which the text was written, and/or performed. I specialise in giving you the skills to interrogate texts deeply and write about these academically with guidance, through lots of modelling which focuses on how to successfully craft different elements of an academic essay. Generally, this means focusing on thesis statements, embedding quotations seamlessly, combining ideas thoughtful and deepening analysis. This approach elevates your academic writing beyond GCSE level. Much like at GCSE, I prioritise extensive timed practice to a variety of prompts, to develop your knowledge, confidence and writing stamina, and ensure that you feel ready for any question. I’ve successfully guided students who have never studied literature before through their A-Level Literature.
Please note that, whilst I have extensive experience teaching the Cambridge A-Level course, the skills required for English Literature are transferrable across different exam boards. If you’re studying for the Pearson Edexcel A-Level or a national A-Level provider, such as AQA or Edexcel, get in touch and I’ll be honest about the ways in which I can support your learning.
